A voice agent is an AI that answers the phone and talks back. ElevenLabs sells them, and its own page says chat did better on anything under a minute.

The Neuron’s Tuesday digest passed along the voice-ahead result and the 4.6 minutes against seven. It didn’t mention the chat-ahead one. That’s the only recap I found, and the study is one source, written by the seller.

The page names the two results differently. Its summary says voice was “best for complex issues,” on a lead of 10.9 points. It says that in short conversations chat has “a slight edge,” on a lead of about nine.

Conversation length

What ElevenLabs reports

Under a minute

Chat ahead by about 9 percentage points

One to two minutes

The two channels “fairly even”

Over two minutes

Voice ahead by 10.9 points, “a 31.7% increase”

Figures from ElevenLabs’ page, read on November 3.

What Does 31.7% Mean When the Page Prints No Rates?

It means voice’s success rate was 10.9 points higher. The page never prints the rates themselves.

Work it backward. If 31.7% is voice measured against chat, then 10.9 divided by 0.317 puts chat near 34 percent and voice near 45. That’s my arithmetic, not an ElevenLabs number. The page compared each agent with itself, so an average of per-agent gains could land somewhere else. I can’t tell which it is.

Take it as a rough size. If the arithmetic holds, fewer than half of the long voice conversations met the business’s own bar.

Is Your Business Even in the Sample?

Maybe not. Agents had to handle at least 50 voice and 50 chat conversations between May and July 2026. That’s 100 contacts in about 13 weeks, so roughly eight a week. Do you get eight a week on both?

Two other choices shape what the number covers. Success is whatever each business decided it was. And “complex” means long: “We used conversation length as a stand-in for complexity.”

The page grants the weak spot itself. Duration is imperfect, it says, “especially for chat, where customers may pause between messages.” A customer who leaves a chat open while they hunt for an order number makes a long chat, not a hard one.

How Do You Count Your Own Calls by Length?

Sort last month’s phone calls and website chats into three piles: under a minute, one to two minutes, and over two. If your phone or chat tool shows how long each one ran, that’s your list. If it doesn’t, sample twenty.

Say most land under a minute: opening hours, a price, whether you’re open Saturday. ElevenLabs’ own numbers point to chat there. Say a good share run past two minutes: a reschedule, a dispute over a bill. That’s where the page makes its case for voice. Which pile is bigger at your place?

I haven’t run a voice agent against a chat agent, so all of this is a read of one page. Before you pay anyone, ElevenLabs or not, call the agent and ask it a real question. The page suggests slow answers make callers hang up. After agents moved to a faster model, it says, the share of calls ending within 15 seconds fell from 21.1% to 3.8%.

If the phone is the first job you’d hand off, put it on the five page. Or name something else. Skipping is fine.

ElevenLabs says voice agents beat chat past two minutes.
