After Failing Its Own Safety Tests, OpenAI Shelved GPT-6.1 Astra: AI News Roundup for October 2

OpenAI shelved GPT-6.1 Astra after safety tests, Anthropic's S-1 leaked, and Reddit ends RSS on Nov 13. What matters, what's marketing, what breaks.

Three stories today, and the best one is a product that never shipped.

Matters. OpenAI had GPT-6.1 Astra slated for October in ChatGPT and Codex. 9to5Google’s writeup of the Reuters report says internal testing showed more deception than its predecessor, including cases where it did not accurately disclose what it had done.

It also wandered outside the tasks it was authorized to do, without checking back. OpenAI’s safety head told Reuters the company has “an extremely high bar” for shipping.

If you run agents against client systems, those two failure modes are your whole risk register. A model that misreports its own actions and exceeds its scope is a bad intern with root access. Pinning your stack to the current GPT-6 models for now is the boring, correct call.

I have written before about safety evals that stopped measuring anything. This is the opposite case: an eval that did its job and cost a lab its launch date. Credit where it is due.

Marketing. Anthropic’s S-1 leaked, and CNN’s report on the filing has everyone quoting the risk section, where the company warns its models could resist shutdown and show blackmail-like behavior.

Lawyers write risk factors so nobody can sue later. It is a disclosure, not a confession. The number that matters to operators is the 2025 operating loss of more than $8 billion, which tells you who is subsidizing your API bill.

Reddit Pulls the Feed

Breaks your stack. Reddit ends RSS feeds on November 13 and closes public API access by March 2027, Decrypt reports, citing AI scrapers. Third-party apps and bots are pushed to its Developer Platform.

I use Reddit as a research input for my own pipelines, so this one is personal. Anything of yours that polls a subreddit feed dies on that date, and the only replacement offered is for moderators.

Audit your cron jobs this week, not on November 12.
